Would you like to specify the resource use strategies of the tree species? Species resource use strategies are a way to divide species according to how they use and conserve resources. Acquisitive species are those capable of quickly taking advantage of the abundant availability of resources such as light, water or nutrients. They are usually fast-growing and relatively short-lived. By contrast, conservative species are specialized in growing under adverse conditions, especially in terms of water and nutrients. They are often slow-growing but long-lived. Intermediate species have a strategy between acquisitive and conservative. In the wet tropics, acquisitive species are pioneer species, and conservative species are late successional (climax) species. In tropical dry forests, there is more and more evidence that the natural processes of early succession are dominated by conservative or intermediate species, while acquisitive ones become more abundant later in the succession when there is already a canopy and water and soil conditions are more favorable.
